MAYOR Alex R. Jajalla on Saturday led the celebration of the 112th Philippine Independence Day in Mahinog with string of activities.
The celebration started at 7:00 a.m. with flag raising, followed by civic military parade, program and wreath laying ceremonies.
Municipal Accountant Leonardo M. Ucat (above photo) was the keynote speaker, with the theme: "Kalayaan 2010 Tagumpay ng Bayan".

Tinahod nga amahan sa atong lungsod Mahinog, Hon. Alex R. Jajalla, atong Vice Mayor Hon. Rogerio C. Acle, Honorable Members of the Sangguniang Bayan, Barangay Chairmen, Heads of Office, Sisters of Mercy, teachers, co-workers in government service, students, mga ginikanan, mga kabataan, ladies and gentlemen, maayong buntag kaninyong tanan.
Kalayaan, independence, freedom, kagawasan, kaugalingnan, mao kini ang mga pulong nga atong madungog karong panahona.
Ang pangutana “are we truly free? Kun moingon ka nga dili, motuo ba sila ug mo okay ra; sigi dili lang.
Ako, I am not totally free. Karon lang sa akong pagbarog dinhi, dili gyod ko ingon nga ganahan ko sa akong gibuhat sa pag-atubang kaninyo, apan gisugo man, mao nga ania ako nakigbisog .
Dunay man goy nihonghong “never run from a good fight” Moingon unya pud sila nga “ah palugitlugit man jud, gusto diay” So be patient with me.
PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE. The Philippine Declaration of Independence occurred on June 12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite.
With the public reading of the Act of Declaration of Independence, Filipino revolutionary forces under Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippines Islands from the colonial rule of Spain, which had been defeated at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish - American war.
The declaration however, was not recognized by the United States or Spain. The Spanish government ceded the Philippines to the United States in the 1898 Treaty of Paris that ended the Spanish – American war.
The United States recognized Philippine Independence on July 4, 1946 in the Treaty of Manila. July 4, was then observed as the Philippine Independence Day until August 4, 1964 when the current president’s father, Pres. Diosado Macapagal signed a law designating June 12 as the country’s Independence Day.
The Independence Day Proclamation saw the unfurling of the National Flag of the Philippines made by Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo and Delfina Herboza and the performance of the Marcha Filipina Magdalo as the National Anthem, now known as the Lupang Hinirang which was composed by Julian Felipe.

Ang July 4 gihimong Filipino - American Friendship Day. So, whatever it is, the most important thing is that our nation is free.
Tema “kalayaan, tagumpay ng bayan” o kagawasan, ang kadaugan sa usa ka nasud.
Ngano ug ngano nga atong gyong handumon ug hatagag gibug-aton ang kaugalingnan.
Dili ba okay ra nang himoon tang ulipon sa mga langyaw, sama sa pagdumala sa mga katsila, hapon ug amerikano kanato sa dugayng panahon.
Dili ba okay ra nang gawngan ta. Kay kun okay basig Amerikano na ta ron.
Ang tubag sa mga Pilipinhon, dili.
Ang atong mga bayani nga sila si Dr. Jose Rizal, si Andres Bonifacio, si Lapulapu ug daghan pang uban, nagpakamatay alang sa maong kaugalingnan.
Ug sumala pa sa atong national anthem “ang mamatay nang dahil sa iyo”.
Mao usab kini ang hagit sa matag usa kanato, Pilipino – ang pagpanalipod, at all cost, sa atong yutang natawhan.
Niingon is Dr. Jose Rizal sa iyang Noli Me Tangere “I die without seeing the dawn brighten over my native land. You, who have to see it, welcome it and forget not those who have fallen during the night”.
Mao nga wala gayod nato hikalimti ang atong mga bayani who fought and died for our freedom.
Kay ginaingon “Without heroes, we are plain people; we don’t know how far we can go”. Baka sa kangkongan pa tayo hanggang ngayon.
Mga kaigsoonan, sorry dili nako madetalye ang historya sa atong Philippine Indepedence kay lakbit ra man ang akong nahisgotan dinhi.
Ako lang segurong ikapangutana dinhi kun unsa ang atong nahimo na o mahimo pa isip usa ka lungsuranon.
Sa atong panahon karon, duna bay kabuluhan o kahulugan alang kanato ang gihimong kabayanihan sa atong mga banggiitan ug maisog nga mga katigulangan.
Alang kanako, dakog kahimoan. Dili ta mahimong maila sa tibuok kalibutan kun dili ta gawasnon nga nasud.
Ang atong boxer of the decade nga si Manny Paquiao. Matud pa niya I am proud to be a Filipino. Dili to niya masulti kun wa pay siyay identity nga usa ka gawasnon nga Filipino.
We are known to be the only Christian nation in Southeast Asia.
Dili unta ta mosugot nga maila ta nga one of the most corrupt country in the whole world. I don’t think malipay ta niana. We are far better than that.
We love truth and dignity. Dili nato na dawaton. Atong misyon ang pagpakigbisog batok sa korapsyon. We should all be fighters against graft.
Kitang mga yanong lungsuranon, unsa bay atong nahimo alang sa atong nasud o bisan lang sa atong lungsod.
Ato bang napahimuslan ang atong pagkagawasnon.
Malipayon ba kitang ni sunod sa mga balaod national o sa mga local ordinances nga gipanday sa atong mga miyembro sa sanggunian nga gi-implementar sa atong halangdong mayor ug sa mga kapitanes - sama sa pagbayad sa buhis, fees and charges;
Ang Lex’s Clean Mahinog Program, ato bang gisunod ilabi na ang dili paglabaylabay sa basura bisag asa. Ato na silang hiposon kay aron hapsay ug limpyo, ang atong palibot, ang atong katilingban.
Kay kining tanan alang ra man sa atong kaayohan. Sa gina-ingon pa - health is wealth. Bawal magkasakit. Mahal maospital.

May kagawasan kitang motoman niining tanan. Alang kini sa atong kauswagan ug kalamboan, dili lang sa atong nasud Pilipinas kun dili sa tibuok kabuhatan.
Ug sensitibo ba usab kita sa katungod sa uban, wala ba nato sila yataki.
Sama sa usa ka bata nga naa pa sa sabakan sa iyang inahan. Ato ba siyang gihatagan og katungod nga matawo.
Wala ba nato siya gi-abort. Kita ra ba diay ang gustong motanaw sa kahayag ug kaanindot sa kalibutan.
Freedom from fear. Nga dili ta mahadlok sa pagsulti ug pagbuhat sa matarong.
We are free to speak out and be heard. Ato bang gipamati ang tingog sa atong mga anak, their ideas, opinions, explanations.
Dunay nag-ingon nga “Freedom is the right to be wrong but not the right to do wrong”.
We are free to appreciate good and beautiful things .
Pero duna lang koy na obserbahan sa mga kabataan karon.
Kun motanaw og programa nga sama ani. Kun sayaw gani ah hala duol dayon, tapok bahalag nagkilikiting init o uwan ba hinoon, pero pagsulti sa speaker, ah hinayhinay dayog lakaw bahala pag kinsa pa na nga speaker - congressman man nag gobernador.
Dugay na kong nakahunahuna dani. Unsa kaha kun kamolong pagpapakigpulong sa speaker, ato pong sabayan og dance number, puede kaha.
Pero morag dili. Seguro, we just learn to respect each other. Mga kabatanonan, according to Jose Rizal “ you are the hope of the fatherland”. Kayo ang pag-asa ng bayan.
Pangandoy sa Pilipino nga magpuyo tang hamugaway nga kun duna tay gusto, atong mapalit, atong maangkon, that we should be self sufficient.
Much better, if we should have more than enough for others to share. Apan wa pa gyod ni mahitabo.
Great majority of the Filipino people are poor.
Dunay dili kakaon katulo sa isa ka adlaw. Seguro dili nato isalig sa gobyerno ang tanan.
Atong trabaho ang pagpangitag paagi aron mabuhi.
Kun dunay livelihood projects nga ikahatag ang kagamhanan mas maayo apan atong katungdanan ang pagtubag sa corresponding responsibility sama loan repayments kun aduna man.
Dili man mahimo nang magsalig lang tag dole outs – free.
Atong sang responsilbilidad ang pagpalambo sa atong napiling enterprise o negosyo.

This must be the great challenge of our incoming President Noynoy Aquino, vice president Jojomar Binay and all his leaders.
But of course with the active cooperation and full support of all the Filipino people and most importantly the blessings of our Father in Heaven, the God most High .
We should all be one. Let our deep sense of nationalism and love of country be the things to guide us toward this end.

The speaker was introduced by Ms. Lina T. Tenestrante. Excerpts of the introduction follows:
Mr. Leonardo M. Ucat was born on November 6, 1945 in Mahinog, Camiguin and married to Ana Russelle Quibilan Ucat who were blessed with four children.
He graduated as Bachelor of Science in Commerce major in Accounting at Cebu Institute of Technology in 1973 and passed the CPA board examination in 1976.
He was a partner of the Sinai Traders Company in Cebu City in 1973-1978.
He became the Chief Accountant at the Island Feed Mills, Inc., Mandaue City, Cebu in 1977-1982.
He also took the position as Comptroller at Montenegro and Company, Inc., Bais City, Negros Oriental in 1982-1983.
He also became the producer of the Fashion Jewelries for export in 1984-1993.
From that time until present, he is hired and faithfully and religiously working as a Municipal Accountant at the Local Government Unit of Mahinog, Camiguin.
He is a church worker and a member of the Lay Minister Society, a lay president of the St. Michael’s Parish Pastoral Council.
He's a very entertaining speaker.
