Regional voters ed team trains youth leaders of Camiguin

THE REGIONAL Voters Education Team composed of trainers from XU GLI, XUCLA, and the Commission on Elections (COMELEC)-10 and the National Youth Commission (NYC) conducted a training for youth leaders in Camiguin Polytechnic State College (CPSC) on Voters’ Education for First Time Voters.

Sixty nine young people who composed of 20 Sangguniang Kabataan representatives and forty nine student leaders from the host school as well as Municipal Election Officers of the five municipalities of Camiguin attended the training.

The activity is the first leg of a series of Training of Trainers (ToT) for Voters’ Education in Region.

It aims at enhancing the Sangguniang Kabataan and school leaders’ knowledge, skills and values on elections as a democratic exercise.

The training had four (4) modules.

Atty. Melanie Ortiz-Rosete, Legal Aid Director of XUCLA discussed the importance of voters’ registration and voting in a module entitled: “The Election as a Democratic Exercise.”

In order to orient and attract the young voters’ to register for the upcoming elections, Atty. Gina Zayas-Sabio, Regional Attorney of COMELEC 10 presented the “Process and Importance of Registration.”

The “Automated Election System” which was discussed by Assistant Regional Elections Director of COMELEC 10, Atty. Dolette Cuevas-Banzon, drew many questions from the participants.

The last and most sensitive module on “Whom to Vote” was discussed by Atty. Nur Jaypha Bacaraman, NYC Regional Coordinator.

This activity is a joint project of Xavier University through the XU Governance and Leadership Institute (XU GLI) and XU Center for Legal Assistance (XUCLA), COMELEC-10, Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-10, National Youth Commission (NYC) and the Gising Barangay Movement (GBM).

The Camiguin Polytechnic State College as academic host for the province of Camiguin provided the venue for the voters’ education.

The ToT for the 2nd district of Misamis Oriental will be conducted on the 11th of July 2009 at Xavier University. All Sangguniang Kabataan officers from the 2nd district of Misamis Oriental will participate in this training. (PIA-Mahinog Information Office)
